Abstract Data results supporting IA2017 Indicator Assessment Changes in Phytoplankton and Zooplankton Communities. Indicators based on plankton functional groups, or lifeforms, can be used to reveal plankton community responses to factors such as nutrient loading from humans and climate-driven change. Changes in the relative abundance between ecologically-relevant lifeform pairs can indicate changes to key aspects of ecosystem functioning, for example, links between the water column and sea floor, ecosystem energy flows and pathways, and food web interactions. The indicator PH1/FW5 uses changes in relative abundance of plankton lifeform (functional group) pairs to examine changes in marine plankton communities. The assessment was carried out for 11 lifeform pairs in the Bay of Biscay and Iberian Coast, Celtic Seas and Greater North Sea from 2009-2014. Because PH1/FW5 is a new indicator in the first phase of development, it has not yet been assessed against a threshold value. Instead, the years 2004-2008, are used as starting conditions (not reference conditions) to examine change in lifeform pairs. [Version 001]
